Job Qualifications:
As part of the Curatorial department, reporting to the Chief Curator, this new Curator will bring the museum’s collection and exhibitions to life for our visitors by planning and organizing exhibitions; researching and presenting scholarly information about the museum’s collection; and recommending acquisitions for the permanent collection. Although The Cummer’s collection is diverse, a specialization in American Art is preferred.

Develop exhibitions that will engage existing and target audiences.

Research, write and present in written and oral form, information on permanent and special exhibitions.
-
Research permanent collection for professional publications.
-
Integrate collection research and education mission into lectures, public programs and symposia for internal and external audience.
-
Assist Chief Curator with development and achievement of curatorial budget.
-
Assist with preparation of exhibition schedule and permanent collection displays.
-
Participate in the development of grants and the cultivation of donors.
-
Research and recommend acquisitions for permanent collection.
-
Maintain active relationships with artists, community members, lenders, donors and professional colleagues.
-
Represent museum through media/public interviews.
-
Supervise library volunteers while overseeing the circulation process including the cataloging and inventorying of the library collection.
-
Develop long range plan for museum library.
-
Other job related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
-
Masters Degree in art history (Ph.D. preferred)
-
Three to five years of professional work experience in an art museum or related educational/research organization; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
-
Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the interpretation and exhibition of art through permanent and traveling collections.
-
Strong written/oral communication skills and public speaking abilities.
-
Demonstrated ability to conduct original research that results in published scholarly materials.
-
Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.
-
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, donors, collectors, professional colleagues and other members of the museum community.
-
Strong organizational, planning and research skills.
-
Work in an office environment in a publicly accessible building.
-
Ability to do some heavy lifting.
-
Valid Florida driver license.
