The Tempest

The Tempest

1965
oil on canvas
24 x 30 in.

Purchased with funds from the Mae W. Schultz Charitable Lead Trust, AP.2011.4.1

Bob Thompson’s promising career was cut short by his death at the age of twenty-eight. In his early twenties, he traveled throughout Europe and became fascinated by Renaissance paintings. He infused religious and mythological scenes popular during these time periods with vibrant colors and rich textures. The Tempest is Thompson’s interpretation of a work of the same name by Renaissance artist Giorgione (c. 1477 – 1510).
