Concerts

Garden Jazz Concert

St. Johns River City Band

7:00PM - 10:00PM

The St. Johns River City Band returns to The Cummer Gardens for an exciting evening of jazz, swing and patriotic music, dancing and fireworks on the river.

Guests may bring blankets, chairs, food and beverages.  Food and drink will be available for purchase from the TreeCup Café. 

$10 for Members and Non-members.  Tickets can be purchased at the door. 

Frequently Asked Questions:

May I bring my child to the concert? Families are always welcome but the recommended attendance age is 13 and up.  We ask that you supervise your children so that everyone can enjoy the performances.  As a courtesy to others, if your child becomes fussy, we ask that you be prepared to remove them from the concert area. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18.

Will the concert take place in poor weather?  Performances take place, rain or shine.  There are NO REFUNDS, exchanges, or rain checks due to rain or inclement weather.  Concert may be moved indoors to Terry Gallery in case of inclement weather.  Check this website for up to date information the day of a performance.

What can''t I bring? Grills, fireworks, candles, cigarettes and cigars are not allowed in the gardens.

Where can I park? Parking is available in the lot at the front of the museum and on the streets surrounding the museum.  Carpooling is recommended.

Is the Museum open on July 4th during the day? No, the Museum will be closed during normal business hours on July 4th, but Museum and galleries will open at 6 p.m. for the Garden Jazz Concert.

Jazz Fusion

Poetry and Performance

7:00PM - 8:00PM

Nationally known spoken-word poet Matthew Hernandez leads this bi-monthly night of explosive literary performance celebrating jazz music, musicians and poetry.  Accompanying Hernandez are poets from the 2009-2010 Jacksonville Brave New Voices poetry slam team, performing their own compositions with energetic vocal artistry.  On July 6th, they celebrate personal relationships with Jazz ABZ music, journeying from musicians Q (Modern Jazz Quartet) through Z (Dizzy Gillespie).

Writer, actor and poet Hernandez has been a guest speaker/performer for the PGA, Wutang Clan, WJCT, NPR, The Miami Poverty Conference, along with numerous news features, various internet podcast and radio programs.

Why Art Matters: An Arts Roundtable

Discuss the relevance of art in the life of Jacksonville with Martha Barrett, Debra Murphy, David Strickland, Preston Haskell and the Cultural Council of Jacksonville, Inc.

Questions up for discussion include:
What is the impact of art on the lives of Jacksonville citizens?
How do we measure the effectiveness of art to increase quality of life?
Do citizens see art as a community benefit?
What public arts programs and purchases are citizens willing to entrust with tax dollars?
And, are our public and private systems for funding the arts effective?

Camp Cummer

Multi-media Arts Camp

9:00AM - 3:30PM

Camp Cummer offers fun ways for your child to grow by discovering art and personal expression.  No previous art experience needed!  Our imagination-igniting activities include portrait painting, architectural drawing, printmaking, mobiles, paper making, three-dimensional drawing and clay sculpting.  Camp culminates with an exciting student art exhibition featuring works produced by campers.  All classes are supervised by museum educators.  

Sign up for one week or two consecutive weeks.  Extended day care available from 8:30 to 5 pm.  Also, check out our Outdoor Adventure Camp, July 19 through 23.

Explore outdoor Florida as an artist, botanist and biologist in the Cummer Gardens and return to the studios to create art based on your findings.  Campers will learn about the creative side of gardening, look at the many ways people use, eat and wear plants, observe the Cummer Oak and its ecosystem, and draw the world through bug eyes.  Recycled paper-making, sculpting, printmaking, garden design and animal outreach from the zoo round out this week of fun.  Extended day care available from 8:30 to 5 pm.

Ages: Children entering grades 1 through 6

An intensive week with advanced lessons for 6th through 8th graders who want to expand skills in printmaking, drawing, painting, paper making and ceramics.  Activities include book making, found-object sculptures, and shoe painting.  This camp is perfect for establishing a strong portfolio.  Extended day care available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
